In 1851, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered the destruction of all American settlements in Puebla and Reynosa de la Frontera because they were considered threats to Mexican national unity. Santa Anna also ordered the burning of all American homes and churches in Dumas. In 1855, José Antonio Meade founded a school near present-day Dumas after he taught at another school within sight of Mexico City. In 1865, Manuel Gomez Núñez opened up a general store on Main Street that became one of the most successful businesses in Dumas until it closed its doors in 1984. Rancho Moreno began operations here in 1889 as part of a land grant given to José Ricardo Moreno by Govánter Agustín Lerdo y Peña for his many years service as mayor of Reynosa de la Frontera. In 1925, Josefina Margarita Zabala organized a group of women who set out to start a church in Dumas after hearing about similar efforts being made throughout Mexico City and other large cities during that time period by women groups seeking social change. They gathered materials including tracts written by Revista Espiritu Santo founder Ignacio López Zamora and money raised through fundraising drives before setting out for DumAS on July 8th with 6 baptized women and 10 children under their care as guidebookers/teachers/pilgrims while singing "Ave Maria". On October 4th they arrived at their destination which was now called Iglesia San Francisco en el Mundo (Church San Francisco World). The first services were held on October 15th with nine baptized women serving as pastors/administrators with Mother Teresa officiating as Celebrant (or high priestess). Dumas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, about 20 miles east of Austin on SH 183. The population was 781 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. Dumas was founded by Frenchman Alexandre Dumas in 1836 as a military post on the Llano River near present day Lubbock. The first post office opened in Dumas on October 12, 1836 and was named for general Jean Baptiste Bourgogne de la Fayette who had commanded French forces at the Battle of San Jacinto. Dumas grew rapidly due to its natural resources and its location midway between Fort Worth and Austin. In 1849, General Sam Houston sent detachments of cavalry to populate Dumass before he moved his army eastward to defend San Antonio against Mexican forces under Francisco Santa Anna. On July 23, 1850, Houston met Santa Anna in an engagement at Monterrey which resulted in Santa Anna's surrender after losing 1,000 men and five cannons (the only defeat Mounted Army ever suffered). When Mexico became independent from Spain in 1821, many Texans decided they would rather have their own country than continue living under Spanish rule. To this end, General Sam Houston called a meeting in December 1830 to create the Republic of Texas which would be administered by Texans instead of Spanish officials. At this meeting, Houston proposed that Texas be divided into two parts - one ruled by Texans and the other run by Mexicans - with Dumass serving as the line dividing point between these two areas. This plan attracted many people because it offered them independence from Spain while still living within her borders. However, not everyone agreed withHouston's plan; some felt that there should be a single government for all Texans instead of multiple governments spread out across several counties. On January 6th, 1835 representatives from six counties formed what would become known as theTX Legislature to propose amendments to Houston's original proposal creating a new state - now known as Texas - without needing congressional approval or division among counties like Houston had envisioned. The TX Legislature approved these amendments on January 13th following heated debate which included speeches by contemporary writer James Fenimore Cooper and future president James Kenedy Jr.. On February 2nd Governor Smith signed an act forming Trinity county out of Jefferson County which also included much smaller towns such as La Grange and Bosque Hills north of present day Dumas along with current day Lubbock south of SH 183 . In order to help the Americans, Frenchman General Don Carlos de Santa Anna organized a revolt against Mexican rule and took control of most of Mexico. A few brave men stayed behind and fought for the Mexican government, but in 1846 they were forced out by Texan forces under General Sam Houston. The Texas Republic was formed as a result of this war and it later became part of the United States.
