The navy's first permanent home was at the Navy Yard on Stephen F. Austin Street. In 1861, the USS Monitor was sunk off of Point Comfort by Confederate forces while under tow from Corpus Christi to Houston. Dumas is a small town in far western Texas, located on the banks of the Red River. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area. Dumas began as a cattle ranch and has since become an agricultural center with plantations and sheep operations. The name "Dumas" comes from Spanish meaning "prominence". The first settlers in what is now Dumas County were Mexican Texans who arrived in 1836. They founded Adobe Walls, which still stands as a reminder of their presence. In 1846, General John Crain's Army invaded Mexico and soon after discovered that Mexico had no intention of surrendering any territory to America; consequently, General Crain issued orders for all Mexicans living east of the Arkansas River to be mustered out and removed to south Texas or face extermination. Many of these men petitioned for exemption from service because they were already married to American women and children; but because many soldiers thought they would convert to Christianity upon arrival in Texas, most received orders to leave their wives behind with their families. When they finally reached Texas, many found themselves unable to find work because there was no land available for them so they returned home. The first white man to set foot in Dumas County was Wm Hogg who came across the path of the Red River on his way from Wichita Falls (now Wichita) into Bowie County in 1847 He named his new settlement Hogg's Ferry Landing after himself although it did not exist until years later when he donated land for it In 1851 A&P grocery store opened up along Main Street near present day I-10 just west of downtown Houston when James Waddell became its owner In 1902 JC Penney opened its first store in Dumas while Texaco built a filling station on Lamar Boulevard just north eight miles away After World War II Dumas saw some growth as businesses such as Ford Motor Company moved into the town including Kaiser Aluminum Works which produced aluminum cans during WWII In 1951 Methodist Episcopal Church organized a congregation here followed by First Baptist Church organization followed by Presbyterian church later that year

Dumas, Texas is a small town located in Johnson County, Texas. The population was 1,856 at the 2000 census. It is the namesake of Alexandre Dumas, author of "The Three Musketeers". The town was founded by John Denton in 1871 and named for General Lafayette. Dumas was originally a cattle drive base with several thousand head of cattle that would be driven to Wichita Falls from early on. The railroad arrived in 1885 and gave the town an immediate boost as businesses started popping up all around the depot. In 1913, Dumas became county seat and it has remained so ever since. Today, Dumas is home to a few stores and restaurants as well as one elementary school which serves grades pre-K through 6th grade. There are also two churches within walking distance - First Methodist Church (founded in 1893) and Baptist Church (founded in 1903).
