Eagle Pass is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first settlers in Eagle Pass were Englishmen who arrived in 1847 and established a trading post on the east side of the creek that flows through the town. The post was abandoned in 1851 because of Indian attacks. A group of Scots-Irish immigrants also settled in Eagle Pass during this time and they organized a local militia to protect their settlements from Apache raids. In 1877, the General Land Office sold all but 9 acres of land within Eagle Pass to J.W. Greaves for $1,000 cash and he began developing the town into a commercial center with cotton plantations as its primary crops. In 1902, an act was passed by Congress which exempted Eagle Pass from city ordinances and made it a municipally incorporated county seat with voting rights for citizens over 21 years of age. In 1907, volunteer firefighters from surrounding counties formed the First Volunteer District No. 8 Fire Department to help fightarsonctions that had been taking place in various parts of Hudspeth County due to drought conditions created by Hurricane Floyd Victims were unable or unwilling to go into battle against floodwaters rising above their homes For many years after Floyd's landfall most firefighters lived off donations from individuals or churches
