Eagle Pass, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. In 1881, Eagle Pass residents donated land to the state of Texas as part of the original Santa Fe Trail project. In 1912, the state designated Eagle Pass as a military reservation and began constructing Fort Worth Army Air Base on the property. The National Guard was activated in 1945 and has been stationed here ever since. Today, Fort Worth Army Air Base houses both United States Air Force Academy cadets and United States Marine Corps recruiters for basic training. The fort also provides housing for American Legionnaires from nearby Guadalupe County who perform guard duty at the airport or other facilities in Eagle Pass. The National Guard Gift History Museum is open every day from 9am to 5pm from April through October and closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Admission is free for all visitors except American Legionnaires performing guard duty atFort Worth Army Air Base who must pay $2 per hour/$10 per day/week (children under 12 are free). The Eagle Pass National Guard was established on December 16, 1907 when the United States Congress approved a resolution to create an organization to protect American citizens in the area. The first unit of the National Guard was activated on December 22, 1907 and served as guards at Fort Sam Houston. In 1912, the National Guard was reorganized and became the Eagle Pass Guards. The first battalion of the Eagle Pass Guards was activated on October 1, 1915 and served as guard duty at Highway 90 until it was decommissioned in 1917. In 1928, the National Guard's second battalion was activated and served as guard duty at Highway 6 until it disbanded in 1930. From 1932-1978, there were no units assigned to Eagle Pass because it functioned as a station garrison for San Antonio. On February 14, 1978, commandant General James Haggerty ordered all military forces within Texas to quash any insurrectionary activity and protect public order. Consequently, all active members of the National Guard were mobilized into units effective that day in order to participate in this potential federal uprising
Eagle Pass, Texas is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 1,592 at the 2010 census. It is located on I-35 about 26 miles east of Austin and 54 miles west of Dallas. Eagle Pass is an old homestead community that was established in 1881 by General James H. Laney. The name "Eagle Pass" derives from the legend of a white eagle which flew over the town on its way to found Fort Whyte in what is now San Antonio de Bexar County. In 1892, George Beebe organized a Pony Express route between Austin and Santa Fe via Eagle Pass and other points within Hudspeth County. The townsite became part of ghost town status after railroad construction eliminated most opportunities for agriculture in the area during the 1920s and 1930s. The last resident to live there died in 1984. A post office called "Eagle Pass" opened in 1902, but closed due to lack of customers. The first mailbag was sent through Eagle Pass on October 9, 1903 from Waco, TX with an express letter from then-Governor William Jennings Bryan that read: "I have just received news that you are situated hereabouts and hope you will keep up your good work." In 1946 local citizens began developing a small agricultural village known as "Bryan Center". The village consisted of homes, landowning farmers and their families who grew crops such as corn, beans, cottonseed oil and tomatoes; also housed several schools including one for girls which served students from nearby Schertz Castle High School until it closed in 1973; two churches - First Baptist Church (founded 1935) which had been used as school auditoriums until 1971; Methodist Episcopal Zion Zion Church (founded 1925), both now open day or evening services with parking available for visitors; three businesses - hardware store (1946), restaurant serving farm-to-table cuisine (opened 1957), gift shop/post office (opened 1967). Additionally there were several hundred citizen volunteers working various aspects of development including building roads, fencing off areas for agricultural production etc.; some activities still occur today such as concerts held at Bryan Center each year during SXSW Interactive weekender
