The Air Force gift history in Edinburg, Texas dates back to 1947. When the United States Air Force was founded, it was decided that a gift for each branch of the service would be made. The Gift History Museum is located in Edinburg and contains air force memorabilia from throughout the years. Between 1947 and 1958, the USAF gifted over $1 million in gifts to member institutions across America. These gifts included items such as aircrafts and training equipment, tools, appliances and furniture. The museum has many artifacts from this time period which can be seen on display including an F-84G Thunderchief jet fighter donated by General Curtis LeMay in 1957. In 1965, General Edwin E. "Buzz" Aldrin became the first person to walk on the moon during Project Apollo 11 and his donation of a lunar landing vehicle called "Eagle" helped make possible further space exploration by the USAF. This event also resulted in General John Hines becoming commandant of cadets at Tuskegee Airmen University after being selected as one of four astronauts who would travel aboard Apollo 11. In 1978, General Rick Hill became first African American Cavalry Commander when he donated two horses to Fort Worth's Military Park for use as cavalry mounts for special events atWestern rodeo events. In 1984, Colonel Tom Parker purchased 100 acres adjacent to Arlington Cemetery near Washington D.C., which served as home for Arlington National Cemetery's Memorial Chapel until 2001 when it moved into its current location next door to Pentagon Building due to building restrictions within Army Reserve Command jurisdiction (ARCOM). In 1993 President George H W Bush dedicated Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson -Edinburg-to serve as a major hub for commands/centers engaged with joint military operations worldwide (Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson is now known as Edwards AFB). It should be noted that not every gift given by members of the USAF will be remembered through time or preserved onsite at The Gift History Museum; some have been passed down through family members or friends who are still active duty members of service branches within the USAF today but do not have access to many historical records or items pertaining thereto. The Edinburg Air Force Base gift history goes back to the early days of the air force in Texas. In 1948, the air force was established and a new wing was created called the 1st Tactical Fighter Wing. The wing was designed to provide fighter aircraft and training for bombardment, ground support, and reconnaissance missions. In 1951, the wing was renamed 1st Fighter Wing and its jurisdiction expanded to include all of East Texas. In 1957, 1st Fighter Wing moved from Edinburg to Lackland AFB in San Antonio. During its time at Lackland AFB, 1st FW became one of America's first combat wings with multiple squadrons flying MiG-15s and F-102s. 1st FW also provided logistical support for various USAF installations in South Texas during this time period including Randolph AFB near Austin and Hill Air Force Base just outside Beaumont TX. In 1961, 1st FW relocated again when it was reassigned from Mexican territory airspace to US airspace followingthe Cuban Missile Crisis. At this time it became known as Tactical Airlift Command (TAC) - an organization responsible for providinglift capability for both USAF general aviation users and NATO fighters flown by coalition members operating over former Soviet bloc countries. I n 1966 TAC activated its first jet squadron - the 336th Tactical Airlift Squadron which flew C-141Ds throughout Southeast Asia into Vietnam on behalf of USAF Strategic Air Command (SAC). This historic event marked a major change for Travis County when TAC arrived here – initially it operated out of Iwo Jima Naval Air Station before moving permanently to Edinburg in 1971 as pilot training headquarters for then newly formed Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF).

In 1840, John Wesley Powell surveyed and named Edinburg after General Edmund Randolph, who had led Ulysses S. Grant's army during the Mexican–American War. The town quickly grew to become one of Webb County's most important commercial centres with its own railway station and mills that produced cotton goods such as clothes and hats. In 1848, when Texas became an independent country, Edinburg became its capital. Throughout much of its history (1836-2010), Edinburg struggled against various waves of Northern poverty which sometimes caused social unrest among its residents; however it has seen some significant economic development since World War II including becoming home to two large refineries for plastics and other products before they were moved to Houston During this time period there also were several notable professional men from within Webb County who went on to have influential careers in government or business: Humble Oilman George Wuerthlein served as county commissioner from 1945-1948; banker James Bowie began his career Prominence Petroleum Company near present day IH-35 east of town and built what is now known as Bowie Elementary School; oilman Sam Rayburn served in both House majority leader (1965-1969) and House minority Leader (1970-1974). Additionally many famous people have made their homes here including actor/director Clint Eastwood (); basketball coach Rick Majerus (); entrepreneurs Leroy Saunders Jr., Vernon McGee and Donny Deutsch In recent years there has been growth in music festivals/concerts downtown while restaurateurs are opening up around town providing more choices for customers As mentioned earlier Webb County has experienced several waves of poverty over time which often leads to social unrest among locals however it has also seen some significant economic development during this time including becoming home to two large refineries for plastics & other products before they were moved to Houston
Edinburg was founded in 1877 by George A. White and his wife, Anna Texas. The town was named after the Battle of Edinburg (1867) where General Sam Houston lost a significant battle against Mexican forces. The first post office was established in 1879. In 1916, the city annexed the neighboring town of Encinitas.
