The El Campo Air Force Base was home to the Texas Air National Guard's 190th Fighter Wing from 1959 until its closure in 2008. The wing's mission was to provide fighter protection for the state of Texas and its citizens. During its time at El Campo, the wing flew more than 350 aircraft including F-4 Phantom IIs, F-16 Fighting Falcons, and E-3 Sentry airborne command posts. In 1958, the Air Force decided to deploy a unit stationed at El Campo AFB. The unit was to be called "The 184th Airlift Squadron". However, due to an airlift shortage caused by the Cold War Era arms race between America and Russia, no such squadron ever existed. In fact, only one F-84D Thunderjet actually flew with The 184th Airlift Squadron during their deployment; however it served as part ofwing C-119 Commando Team also stationed at El Campo AFB. With the late 1940s through early 1960s there were few restrictions on United States bomber flying over Communist China which made it easy for American pilots and crews to fly over China without detection from Chinese radar systems providing warning of any potential enemy aircraft or missiles headed their way. This gave USAF pilots valuable experience in Aerial combat operations against ground targets while also providing US military support in proxy wars around the world while denying Beijing strategic advantages against other NATO members nations that were located near China proper. It should be noted that during this time aerial warfare had not evolved into where battlefield penetrations by modern technology now exists so much as full scale air/ground campaigns utilizing overwhelming firepower would have been necessary due to lack of better intelligence available pre WWII when all sorts of anti aircraft threats could have been anticipated including present day missiles etc... On 3 November 1949 Commander George Freeman Shaw assumed command of The 184th Airlift Squadron based out of RAF Mildenhall). As commander Shaw ordered his squadron into combat status within two weeks after taking command he had plenty of orders coming in asking for 'the best' jet transports (FAC) possible! With just one months rest before deploying along with his 82nd Bomb Wing Commander Colonel John H Swingler who took command from him on 1 December 1949 both Shaw and Swingler knew they needed all available jets available for takeoff immediately upon arrival at our new basecamp/airfield! The first operational flights occurred on 17 December 1949 with our TAC jet transports taking off from RAF Mildenhall bound for Chengdu ( East Germany ). On 18 December we experienced some very high altitude flying being conducted by 2nd Lt Werner Strasser whilst piloting an RF-4C Phantom II having reached a height exceeding 10 000 feet! Unfortunately this type of flying did not remain confined within airspace controlled by USAF but crossed intoRussian airspace resulting in some very costly losses for our nation’s sky protectors!!!

El Campo is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Hudspeth County were Frenchmen who founded a trading post on the San Antonio River in 1795. The post was abandoned by 1810 after being raided by Mexican forces. A new trading post was established at El Campo in 1814 by Capt. James Bowie and became one of the most important commercial centers on the Rio Grande during the period of Ulysses S. Grant's military campaigns against Mexico. In 1847, John Wesley Powell located and named El Campo for David Hogg Campbell, his brother-in-law and personal friend from Wales who had been captain of HMS "Adventure" during Powell's exploration Expedition of 1850–1851 as member of Rear Admiral George Preble's squadron commanded by Commodore Matthew Perry (Perry expedition). In 1865, Major General Edwin Mims erected a national monument to perpetuate Mount Hood National Monument east of El Campo at what is now US 290/US 287. In 1870 Santiago Carrillo bought 524 acres (220 ha) near present day El Campo from Adolphus Gibbs for $8 per acre ($3 million today). Carrillo named his land el campo ("the field"). He built a small ranch house there which served as his seat until he sold it to local farmers in 1903 for $6 per acre ($2 million today). Carrillo died prior to its sale and no heirs claimed it; it reverted to crown lands status under US Patents No.: 2045748 granted to José Clemente Cisneros on November 3, 1907 (). One hundred years later on December 12th 2009 an additional 103 acres (41ha) was added adjacent to el campo proper with an original grant date back to October 16th 1860 (). In 1995-1996, due to budget cuts within CENTCOM, 1 TAC relocated its Headquarters from Orlando AFB into Wright-Patterson AFB in Ohio. In 1927-28, a large irrigation project was completed which allowed farming to take hold on land that had been used for cattle pastures since before Texas became a state. In 1951-1954, two oil wells were drilled near present-day El Campo by Standard Oil Company Ltd., making it possible for Texans to enjoy access to oil resources that had been difficult to find before. As demand for oil increased throughout the 1960s and 1970s,El Campo experienced rapid growth with more businesses opening up and more homes being built.
