In 1865, the United States acquired El Campo Ranch from Manuel de la Hoz y Costilla. The ranch had been passed down through generations of families who used it as grazing land and for crops. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson visited San Antonio and toured Fort Sam Houston National Monument on Market Street where he ordered that all artillery be taken down and replaced by hand-held guns to honor Southwestern pioneers who had fought in World War I. El Campo, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The town began as a cattle ranch and agricultural center in what is now Hudspeth County. In 1879, the Mexican government granted land to John Hance for $2,000. Hance built a sawmill and gristmill on the site and named his new community after himself - El Campo (the camp). The mill became one of Hudspeth County's largest employers with over 100 workers from nearby Round Rock at its peak in 1905. In 1958, El Campo experienced some unusual events that helped shape its future as an urban center. A tornado tore through the town on October 15th of that year killing three people and injuring twenty-six others. This event helped spur development in El Campo as developers made plans to build office buildings, apartments, and other commercial structures near the destroyed mill building. Today, El Campo continues to be an important cultural and economic center for southeastern Travis County with its many cultural attractions including two theaters (The Playhouse at Elm Creek Park & The Riviera theater), several restaurants/cafés/bars/nightclubs/stores, arts organizations such as The Arts Council of TX (formerly known as UT Arlington Fine Arts), numerous art galleries and museums including Lamar University's Perkins School of Design which offers undergraduate degrees in Fine Arts & Architecture; music industry resources including South by Southwest Film Festivalivals held annually at Cedar Park Racetrack; education institutions such as Rice University's McAllister School of Business which offers undergraduate degrees in Business Administration & Marketing;and professional businesses such as Glassiere Law Firm LLP which provides legal services through litigation & elections law

El Campo is a small town in southern Texas that has been in existence since 1836. The town was named for the Spanish word "campo" which means "land of grass." El Campo was founded by Antonio López de Santa Anna, the 24th president of Mexico, and his family. When Santa Anna moved from Mexico City to El Paso in 1835, he decided to build a new capital on the U.S.-Mexico border. He chose El Paso because it was an established trading post and because there were no Native American tribes living in Texas at that time. The first settlers in El Campo arrived in 1836. The town grew rapidly due to its location and its importance as a stop on the Underground Railroad for escaping slaves during the Civil War. In 1865, El Campo became part of the United States following the Mexican-American War. The town experienced some prosperity during this time but eventually fell into disrepair after World War II caused extensive damage to infrastructure including bridges, roads, and homes. Today, much of what remains of El Campo is a series of picturesque hills known as "The Grasslands." There are several reasons whyEl Campo remains an important community today. First, it is located within easy reach of many major metropolitan areas such as Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth.
