In 1906, the townsite of El Campo was annexed to Fort Worth; however, it reverted back to Webb County jurisdiction following that year's annexation of Dallas. In 1915, an oil well was drilled at Nellis Field #2 (now Eagle Ford Shale), adjacent to present-day El Campo; this led to increased production and development around the town site. By 1937, about sixty businesses had been established within its boundaries; five years later, fifty-six businesses had joined forces to form the Texas Cotton Company Ltd., which remains one of Fort Worth's most important economic engines today. The population of El Campo peaked at 10,000 during World War II due to military housing construction nearby; however, since then population growth has been modestly declining (-1%.) At present day there are only a few dozen people living inside city limits while most residents commute into Fort Worth or other larger cities within Webb County for employment opportunities and shopping malls located just outside city limits offer little competition for local retail establishments.$
The site of El Campo, Texas is located in Hidalgo County on the east bank of the Rio Grande. The town was founded by Pascual Valenzuela in 1827 and named for him. The first post office at El Campo was established in 1829. In 1840, Mexican War veteran Antonio Lopez settled here and called it Los Angeles de la Bandera (the Lone Star City). By 1845, the population had increased to 300 people and a year later, the town became an independent municipality with its own government.
