Ennis, Texas is a town located in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The town began as a small settlement on the banks of the Brazos River near what is now downtown Austin. In 1847 Ennis post office was established and by 1865 it had reached its present size with a population of 103 residents. The first school in Ennis was built in 1854 and served grades one through twelve. A store and restaurant were also developed in this time period which remain extant to this day. In 1907, Ennis incorporated as a city and began to grow rapidly due to its location along I-35W; oil exploration began in earnest in nearby Webb County and soon there were oil wells throughout parts of Hidalgo County including Ennis. By 1935, Ennis had become one of the most important petroleum towns in Texas with over 100 businesses operating within its boundaries employing over 1,500 people employed directly or indirectly by the oil industry. During World War II, many enlisted men from Dallas worked for General Motors assembly plants located in neighboring Round Rock and San Antonio; these workers formed what became known as "The Peculiar 12" because they all held military identification numbers that differed from anyone else living within those cities limits at that time. A large shopping center called Park Plaza opened up adjacent to Interstate 35W east of town between 1970-1972 givingEnnis an immediate edge over Round Rock when it came to economic development during that time frame but eventually both towns grew increasingly close while maintaining their separate identities until they merged into one municipality on January 1st 1997 under then Mayor Wiley Tillman's leadership which marked the beginning of an era where both towns became one entity where everyone participate equally in decisions made about both physical expansion and cultural values emphasizing community spirit rather than individual achievement or success/failure alone

The City of Ennis was founded on May 1, 1872, by James A. Ennis and his wife Lillie M. Ennis. The first store in Ennis was opened by James A. Ennis and his brother-in-law Wm. Hogg on Broadway Street. In 1886, John Crain became the first Mayor of Ennis after serving as mayor for two years from 1885 to 1888. The history of the City of Ennis can be traced back to its early days when it was founded as a small town located in what is now Southwest Dallas County on the banks of Buffalo Bayou near present day McKinney Park Cemetery and Old Fort Worth Road (now US 75). At that time there were only a few homes and businesses in what is now downtownEnnis with only a single schoolhouse serving grades K-6 at First Baptist School until 1872 when James A., wife Lillie M., brother Jno Hogg & their son Sam opened the first store in what would later become known as "the heart of town". It wasn't until 1886 that John Crain became the first Mayor of this small Town located just east off I-35E - close to today's McKinney Park Cemetery - after serving as Mayor for two years from 1885 to 1888! In 1901 Dr. Harry Baulding organized a group who wanted to establish an agricultural college within easy reach of their community so they could better serve their citizens with education opportunities for those who wished to improve themselves both inside & outside their home country – Cuba! They began fundraising efforts which soon netted them support from many local business owners who saw great potential for growth anchored within their own neighborhoods surrounding Buffalo Bayou! On December 15th 1901 Drs Harry Baulding & Edwin Poe donated $10K towards land acquisition funds needed to erect & buildable structures on which they named Rice University; making Rice University one our earliest private universities! Construction began shortly thereafter with classes starting September 1902!!! And so began one very special chapter in ourCity’s rich history…Rice University continues today as one our top educational institutions offering over 100 undergraduate programs including Business Administration/Marketing/Public Affairs/Sociology/Political Science/Veterinarian Medicine/Environmental Studies…..Today Rice University campus spans across four buildings adjacent To I-635E & Elm St….What started out as humble beginnings has grown into an iconic university bringing opportunity not only to downtownEnnisto’s residents but also far beyond its borders!!
On November 15, 1868, Ennis was founded by John and Martha Ennis. The couple had come to Texas in the hopes of finding a new home where they could raise their families. They found what they were looking for in the small town of Ennis, which is located on the banks of the Sabine River. TheEnnises started a grocery store and built a home that still stands today. John also became involved in local politics and served as mayor from 1896 to 1900.
