Ennis is a town in Grayson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,627 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1881 by Prentice Randolph Ennis. The first post office in Ennis was established on February 6, 1881, and remained open until it was discontinued on December 31, 1903. The first settler to arrive in what is now Ennis was Prentice Randolph Ennis who landed his wagon train at the current site of the town on November 15th of that year. He started trading goods with the Native Americans and eventually built a cabin which he named "Herschel's Cabin" after himself and his brother-in-law Herschel Smithson. In 1886 when the railroad reached Ennis it connected with Dallas and made an immediate impact upon its citizens as trade increased between Dallas and Fort Worth. In 1888 Hetty Post erected a two story frame building known as "The Capitol" on Main Street which served as a schoolhouse for grades one through twelve years before being replaced by the present day School Administration Building in 1907. It wasn't until 1925 when voting rights were granted to women within city limits following passage of legislation by then Governor John Connally that progress began to be made towards female empowerment within this largely male dominated community. In 1930 Wanda Grimes became one of Americas first woman mayors when she took over from her predecessor Jesse Helms as Mayor of Dallas after he resigned due to opposition from City Council members led by Jock Mahoney Sr.. The following year saw another milestone for women when Mrs Mona Hanna Foust became America's first ever female Judge (at age 51). In 1951 local high school dropouts Harry Daugherty and Joe Byrnes founded their own high school called Highland Heights High School which would serve students until 1978 when it closed due to budget cuts affecting most local public schools across Texas including those located in Grayson County including Ennis where Highland Heights remains open today providing PreKindergarten through 12th grade education while also maintaining its athletic programs such as football, wrestling & basketball along with other extracurricular activities such as artistic expression under the guidance of Msgr./Mrs./Dragons Den head coach Mr./Msgr./Dragons Den assistant coach Tommy Barretto
Ennis is located in the Hill Country of Texas and was founded by James F. Ennis on November 25, 1836. The town was named for him, who had previously settled in what is now West Virginia. The first school in Ennis opened in 1837 and the first post office was established in 1840. In 1846, Ennis became a county seat and continued to grow until it reached its peak population of over 100,000 in the early 1960s. However, economic stagnation during the late 1960s and 1970s led to a decline in population and a loss of jobs; as of 2010, Ennis has about 60 residents.
