The first settler in what is now Ennis was John Hance who arrived in 1836. In 1840, Elisha Goode settled in what is now Ennis and began to grow corn and wheat for local markets. A post office called Goode was established here in 1847, but it failed to take off because no one wanted to deal with an isolated community on the edge of a desert country. In 1865, Wm Tate moved his family to what is now Ennis from Bowie County after buying land there for $8 per acre (based on average prices at that time). His purchase made him one of the earliest settlers hereabouts. By 1870, he had erected around twenty homes and started trading goods with other settlements across Hudsphil County for items like flour and butter from cattle operations northward along I-10. With new transportation improvements being developed throughout central Texas during this period such as railroads connecting Dallas/Fort Worth with Houston via San Antonio or Austin proper, Tate became increasingly prosperous thanks to this expanding trade network within his own boundaries - something that not manyTexans could boast about during their early days settlement phase! One possible reason why farming took so long to take hold in this rural area may have been due to its harsh climate - especially given how hot it can get here during summertime! Ennis, Texas is a small town located in Medina County, Texas, about 25 miles east of Dallas. The population was 6,811 at the 2010 census. Ennis was founded in 1881 as a cattle and horse ranching community called "Emmett". The name change to "Ennis" after John A. Ennis who served as county auditor from 1907-1909. The first store in Ennis opened on Main Street in 1881. In 1886, the town had 10 residents and two stores. The post office was established in 1888 and named for local rancher James W. Emmett Sr.. That year, the railway arrived and changed the economy of the community by bringing new jobs to locals such as cooks, drivers, laundrymen and clerks. By 1906, there were 14 residents and three stores with a school serving grades one through six. In 1909 when J A Ennis became county auditor, he made changes that would have an impact on the future of Ennis including increasing irrigation water availability which led to increased crop production; creating more public works projects like roads and dams;and investing money into education which would lead to Increased enrollment at schools throughout Medina County. These advancements helped make Ennis one of the most prosperous towns within its borders during those years while also giving rise to some unique aspects such as its nickname "The Banjo Town". In 1924 when Gertrude Rice became mayor after winning an election against incumbent Hildebrandt Wellman by 1 million votes she is considered one of America's first female mayors because she nationalized utilities within her city limits making it easier for businesses to get access to essential resources without having to worry about politics interfering with their business decisions . Today much like then –Ennis continues to thrive thanks largely to its diverse demographics including people from all walks of life who come together for vibrant economic development opportunities
