The first European to visit Farmers Branch was the French explorer and trader François de La Salle in 1793. He named the town after a nearby creek, which he called the "Milk of the Buffalos." Families of Texans started arrive in large numbers during the 1800s. One group of pioneers, led by Capt. John Fenton, settled at what is now Elmendorf Road and camped there for two years. The group then founded Fort Worth on July 6, 1836. One of Texas' most famous citizens was Sam Houston, who served as governor from 1837-1841 and as president from 1845-1849. Houston's home at 7th and Brazoria Streets is still standing today.
