Farming in Farmers Branch began in the mid-1850s when John Fenton and his family bought 1,000 acres of land on the banks of the Brazos River. The Fentons were among the first farmers to plant cotton in this area. In 1859, Fenton's son, Jameson, built a house on what is now FM 527. The original farmhouse was replaced by a new one in 1926. A Grains Mill and others developed around FM 527, with commercial production beginning in 1922. Cotton production ended around 1970; however, some fertilizer leases have been kept since that time for use on other farms nearby.
