Flower Mound is a small town located in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,572 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Worth–Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Flower Mound was John Fitch on July 4, 1836. A post office was established in 1837 and name changed to Flower Mound in 1841. The town became a municipality on December 15, 1907. On January 22, 1959 it merged with Arlington to form the Fort Worth–Arlington metropolitan area. In 1936 local schools created an Agricultural High School for boys and girls which operates as a public school today. In 1946 local schools also created a Junior College for women to provide college level study for women residents of Flower Mound and nearby towns such as Arlington and Richardson (now Plano). In 1966 the high school closed and all courses were transferred to Richardson’s Woodlands Independent School District while Girl Scout Troop #5 continued operations until 1984 when they disbanded due to lack of enrollment after World War II ended; their property now houses Richardson East Middle School which opened in 2006 Flower Mound is located at (32.8683,-95.61463). In 1848, Flower Mound was founded by ranchers in what is now West Texas. The town became a center for cattle and mineral trading, as well as a stop on the Overland Stagecoach Trail. In the late 1800s, flowermound residents developed a reputation for their wildflowers, which gave the town its name. Flower Mound is located at 9°25′N 95°48′W about halfway between Austin and Dallas. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , all of it land. As of 2016, there were no businesses in Flower Mound that provide real-time weather information. However, according to Google Street View imagery from 2013-2015, there are buildings with signs saying "Weather Now" in various areas around town. The Flower Mound area began to be populated by Native Americans in the late 1800s. The first European to visit the area, William Clark, made his way through what is now Flower Mound on a journey from Texas up the Red River. He noted the many spruce trees and other plants growing in the area and named it la Flambeau because of their bright redichita flowers. In 1827, James A. Cook explored and mapped the area that includes present-day Flower Mound while out on a scouting trip for new land grants in Texas. Cook named the area la Prairie de l'Estang (the Prairie of Estang). In 1840, ranches were established around present-day Flower Mound by German settlers following Mexican War land grants given to them in that year. By 1849, at least eight buildings had been built near where today's courthouse stands on Main Street in downtown Flower Mound. By 1865, most of what is now Flower Mound was developed as an agricultural township with a population of about 375 people. The town site was chosen because it had good water supplies and easy access to markets for goods produced in surrounding counties. Development continued until about 1930 when agriculture became less important and nearby towns took over most of the development role within their respective areas. Today, much of downtown Flower Mound still consists of pre-1930 commercial buildings which are slowly being phased out as newer renovations become available within city limits
