The population of Flower Mound increased rapidly during World War II due to military activity around Fort Worth and nearby Arlington Heights Naval Air Station. In 1945, the town had 614 residents and it reached its peak with 1,082 residents in 1950; however, this growth stopped after the war ended. After a period of decline, the population began to increase again during the 1990s as more people moved into central Texas during that decade for economic opportunities created by new technology companies such as Apple Inc., Intel Corp., Microsoft Corporation., ExxonMobil Corporation., Brown Brothers Harriman & Co., Lufkin-based RefinXion Oil Corporation,, and many other businesses which developed along I-10 near Fort Worth specifically within 10 miles (16 km) of downtown Dallas/Fort Worth Airport (). In 1936, the population had grown to 1,500 people. The town was first incorporated as a city on November 3rd of that year. On December 12th of that year, Mayor Hargrave resigned after being elected to Congress for Texas’ Second District. The first black person to live in Flower Mound was Emmett Till Jr., who moved into town from Memphis on October 15th of 1949. At its peak during World War II, Flower Mound had 4 military barracks and 40 businesses located within its boundaries. After the war ended, many of these businesses closed down and the population dwindled over time until it reached its current size today.
Founded in 1847 by John Wesley Powell, Flower Mound was the first town in Texas. The town was named for a mound of earth that had been used as a cemetery. The town quickly grew into a major trading center and became known for its produce, livestock, and manufactured goods. In 1868, the state legislature created Flower Mound as the county seat of Hudspeth County. The settlement continued to grow until it reached its peak in the early 1920s when it had around 2,000 residents. However, by the late 1920s and throughout the 1930s, Flower Mound's population began to decline as a result of various factors including environmental problems and economic constraints. By 1940, only 100 people remained in Flower Mound.
