The navy has a rich history in Fredericksburg, Texas. The city was named for Rear Admiral John B. Richardson who served as Commander of the Department of the Gulf from 1881 to 1886 and later became Commodore at Fort Worth. Richardson also donated land for the first naval shipyard in America, which was known as Richardson’s Shipyard. The early navy presence in Fredericksburg can be traced back to 1837 when Captain James Fenton built USS Lexington on land donated by Rear Admiral Richardson. The shipbuilder continued operations until 1861 when he moved his business to Portsmouth, Virginia because of the Civil War. In 1865, Captain Fenton again donated land for a shipyard and this time it was called Richardson’s Shipbuilders and Navy Yard. The yard produced warships such as USS Constitution (1814), USS Somers (1849), USS Perry (1851), and CSS Sumter (1862). In 1862, Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered all naval vessels except vessels carrying munitions to leave Richmond Naval Shipyards due to lack of supplies. However, Rear Admiral Richard Hogg refused to comply with Ewell’s order and ordered his ships back into action. This defiance outraged Confederate Secretary of State Jefferson Davis who threatened Richardson with arrest if he didn’t provide more supplies for the navy. Aftermath of this confrontation led Commodore Hogg to resign from his position and enter politics instead. During World War II, Fredericksburg played an important role in the military campaign against Japan that began on December 7th 1941 when Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbor; two days later they had captured Guam which located just south-west of present day San Antonio; followed by Philippines on January 6th 1942 after Japanese forces successfully landed there during Operation Eagle Claw amphibious assault operation targeting Army airfields near Manila Bay; these actions resulted in United States victory over Japan at Clark Airfield near Angeles City on February 5th 1942 resulting in American occupation of Luzon Island which included most major islands including Mindanao Island; however many small islands were not taken along with Okinawa Prefecture or Shuri Island which remain under Japanese control today due to their proximity to Tokyo . The Navy has a long and proud history in Fredericksburg, Texas. The first ship to call at the port of Fredericksburg was the USS Constitution on October 26, 1846. The USS Constitution relieved the HMS Guerriere in that area during the Mexican-American War. In 1898, Commodore John F. Richardson's flagship, USS Enterprise, came to anchor at Fredericksburg Harbor when it was destroyed by fire off Mexico City. As part of Operation Neptune's Spear (the Allies' invasion of Sicily), Enterprise was beached at Anzio beach and used as a prison camp for American prisoners of war (POWs) from December 1944 until February 1945. The POWs were liberated by General Dwight D. Eisenhower's forces on April 9, 1945.
Fredericksburg is a small town in southeastern Texas, nestled on the banks of the Buffalo River. The population was 3,871 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Fredericksburg-Richardson, TX Micropolitan Statistical Area. Fredericksburg began as a trading post on the confluence of the Buffalo and San Jacinto Rivers. In 1849, General Sam Houston purchased land adjacent to what is now Fredericksburg from Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna for $1,000. At that time, it was one of only two American towns located on Spanish soil. After independence was won in 1836 and Spain ceded its possessions in North America to the United States, Houston decided to name his new western outpost "Houston" after his old friend and patron saint—the Virgin Mary. On November 8, 1849 – less than two weeks after independence had been declared – Houston issued a proclamation naming Fredericksburg "The First National Capital of Texas". The town grew rapidly during Reconstruction following the Civil War (1865-1877). By 1870, there were 486 residents living in downtown Fredericksburg; by 1880, that number had grown to 1,041 people. During this time period many local businesses became associated with military services or politics: including a munitions plant operated by Union Generals John Broun and James Longstreet; an armory where Confederate General Robert Ewell stored ammunition before his surrender at Appomattox Court House; and an arsenal/firearms factory run by Armstrong Whitworth & Co., which supplied Confederate forces during their campaign against Ulysses S Grant's Union army known as The Great Rebellion (1868-1870). After Reconstruction ended in 1877 due to political correctness policies implemented by President Rutherford B Hayes's administration, white flight began to occur throughout much of southern Texas following joblessness and other social problems caused by rapid industrialization within African American communities in northern cities such as New York City and Chicago. As white settlement increased along both sides of the Buffalo River – primarily eastward into what is now Wichita County –Fredericksburgh shrank significantly In response black migration began occurring northward into what are now McLennan County (later Travis County) and Austin County (later Williamson County), eventually leading to annexation by those counties during prohibition era times when those areas were still mostly rural.[2] In 1886–87 Fredericksburgh experienced its first major fire when several buildings on Main Street caught fire due to faulty wiring inside local homes belonging to some business owners who did not have insurance coverage for such events[3]. This event led alsoto passage of legislation designed specifically for Frederick's adherence thereto called "An act providing for electric lighting throughout certain portions of this State"[4]. As more blacks moved into inner city areas outside historic downtown Fredericksburg,[5][6] racial tension mounted initially among largely illiterate black men who worked Downtown while wealthier whites lived uptown or just outside town limits watching everything going on from their windows or balconies[7]. However over time these tensions slowly dissipated as integration proceeded apace within society overall[8], though some remain today unanswered questions about why particular levels of integration occurred within certain segments of society while others did not[9], particularly given contemporaneous reports alleging systematic racism across all areas within various institutions facing public scrutiny throughout much Southern California during late 19th century
