In 1978-1979 Freeport was designated as an alternate site for Space City USA due to concerns about sprawl leading to environmental damage caused by development adjacent to NASA facilities there including Interstate 35W between IEPB property west of downtown and NASA's Johnson Space Center east of IEPB property north of US Highway 623 outside Loop 610 loop
