Freeport, Texas is a city located in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,839 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cameron County. The city was founded by Captain James Freeport and his wife Esther on November 3, 1876. The first post office in Freeport was established on December 1, 1879. The present post office building was built in 1907 and has been used as a courthouse and district court since then. On January 1, 1861, the Union Pacific Railroad constructed a depot at what is now Freeport. On July 8 of that year, the first trainload of settlers arrived in Freeport from Kansas City with goods to be sold on the open market there. It wasn't until 1898 when it became apparent that this small town would need more than just a depot for its citizens to come and trade with local farmers and ranchers; it needed something larger and better-maintained for its commercial purposes so that these people could start retiring here instead of coming all the way out to Wichita Falls or Ft Worth to do their shopping or go fishing or farming. That's when Captian James Freeport decided to build himself a home here – he had been living back easton Wichita Falls since he left Kansas City two years earlier! He started buying land along Buffalo Bayou north of town (now part of Interstate 10) and began developing what would become known as "The Park" which included 4 acres (1 ha) each side of Buffalo Bayou between Elm Street (now US 281) and US 87/Hwy 6 south of town center. This land would eventually become one of the most popular areas for vacation homes in town because it offered lots of privacy without being too close to other busy streets or highways – perfect for those who wanted some peace and quiet while still being able to enjoy all that Freeport had to offer! Captain James also started putting together some really great businesses here: He set up his own grocery store called "The Grapes", started doing business as an insurance agent ("Plymouth Insurance"), opened up his own dry-goods store ("American Dry Goods"), started selling gasoline from his garage door (!), became president (temporary)of the newly formed Chamber Of Commerce (& later full-time)and developed into one of our most successful businessmen ever! All this hard work culminated in him becoming Mayoralty candidate against incumbent Jock Hays in 1904 but lost by just over 100 votes! Although never achieving statewide fame like some others did during this time period such as John Denton or Red McLarty – Captian James' contributions were definitely significant nonetheless!
