In 1945 President Harry S Truman ordered all American industries closed except those producing essential war materials (), and these closures devastated the local economy (). Afterward there was quick growth as new companies came into being such as Sunoco Oil Company (), Shell Oil Company (), and Texaco Corporation (). However this period also saw some serious problems including numerousoverty cases () and freeways built without taking into account traffic patterns or how they would affect neighboring communities ().
