The name Friendswood comes from two settler families—the Foresters and the Velders—who arrived in 1836. The community was founded by Orville Freeman and his wife Mary Moody Freeman on November 3, 1848. Friendswood became an incorporated municipality on December 1, 1957. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 21,513 people. The city of Friendswood has a population of 14,898 as of 2018. The first settler to arrive in what would become Friendswood was Orville Freeman and his wife Mary Moody Freeman on November 3, 1848 when they landed their ship "Osprey" at Galveston Island after sailing from England with their son Alfred (1817-1899). They started out farming land that they bought near present-day downtown Friendswood and named it "Friendswood." The name derives from two settler families: the Foresters and the Velders who arrived in 1836 because they were part of General Samuel Houston's army during the Battle of San Jacinto. In 1951 FriendswOOD became an incorporated municipality with its own government which operated under mayoral governance until 1985 when it became fully under city control as Friendswood City managed by Mayor Tom Thomas announced on January 2nd 1985 that he would not seek re-election due to health reasons but wished to pass onto future generations his legacy as mayor who had made Friendswood City one of America’s “largest” suburban cities with over 21 thousand residents living within its limits including fifteen thousand students attending local universities including Rice University and Baylor University . Tom continued to serve as Mayor for twelve years until he stepped down effective February 15th 2011 having been term limited under Texas law which does not allow governors to serve more than six terms consecutively without running for office again so upon stepping down he gave all powers back to Friendswood City Councilmember Stacy Longoria who will now serve four year terms starting July 1st 2021 thru May 15th 2029 continuing through 2020 reelection year
