The Gainesville, Texas Army National Guard was activated on July 1, 1903. The unit began its service as part of the Texas State Defense Force under the command of Maj. Gen. Nellie Blyth until it was redesignated as an infantry regiment on December 15, 1913. The regiment served in World War I and World War II before being mobilized for Operation Neptune's Spear in October 2011. The Gainesville, Texas Army National Guard is a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. It has a detachment stationed at Fort Bliss in San Antonio, TX and also operates a detachment at Little Rock Air Force Base in Arkansas. Gainesville, Texas is a small town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,534 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. Gainesville was founded in 1884 by Ole Gaines and his wife Anna Pemberton Gaines. In 1907 it became an incorporated village and in 1920 it became a city. In 1953 it lost its city charter and became an unincorporated community again. It received its first municipal water supply on July 1, 1954 from the now defunct Newlands Water Company. The original downtown core of Gainesville had two buildings which remain extant: the old municipal building (now the courthouse), built in 1884 by Ole Gaines and his wife Anna Pemberton Gaines, and the Masonic Temple (now known as First Baptist Church). The first store on Main Street opened in 1898. A post office was established at Gainesville on October 24, 1908. The name of the town changed to "Gainesville" on November 8 of that year after James Gainsborough donated land for a city hall site just east of Main Street (then called East Avenue). On March 9, 1912 Mayor Orville Hargrave certified that "the present form ofgovernment herewith adopted provides for all classes of citizens to be accommodated without discrimination." On July 1, 1954 when Newlands Water Company went bankrupt due to overspending on investments in new supplies,[1] gainesville's first Municipal Utility District service began providing water to residents from an existing well located one block east of Main Street near what is now Billie Jean King Boulevard; this well continued providing service until 1984 when municipal services were discontinued due to budget cuts by then City Manager Don Hallquist[2]. Thereafter residents relied upon private wells until 1990 when public water deliveries resumed.[3] In 2000–2001 local developer/manager Brett Mahoney developed several high-end residences with plans for retail shops inside them adjoining Interstate 10 southbound lanes along Speedway Drive between I-10 & US 59W concurrent with I-30; these residential developments were not realized but have been cited as evidence that if businesses want access to Interstate 10 they need more than just 2 miles away from I-30 or less than half mile off Interstate 5 where most businesses are located today[4]. However no retail development took place as there were only six homes total even though there were supposed to be twenty because Mahoney wanted three schools within easy walking distance instead of two each like we have today[5],[6]. This lacklustre development also contributed to some skepticism about whether or notgainesville would ever become truly prosperous again despite being within commuting range both ways unlike other towns which have seen major investment over time such as Round Rock & Georgetown TX which saw large volume shopping sprees adjacent I-10 while their locals enjoyed smaller doses adjacent Highway 183 outside Round Rock Limits

Gainesville is a small town in south-central Texas. It was founded in 1879 by James W. Gaines and his family, and has since grown into a thriving community with a rich history. The town was first known as Gainesville, Texas, after James W. Gaines's father, who settled there in 1868. In 1879, the young Gaines family moved to what is now the city of Houston and began to develop their land into what is today the towns of Gainesville, Tomball, Springdale and Clearwater. The name of the settlement changed once again in 1903 when the United States Post Office was established at Gainesville and it became known as that town until 1959. Gainesville's namesake came from one of its earliest settlers - John Denton gaine - who arrived there on horseback in 1867. He had come from Kentucky with his parents and siblings to start a new life in what is now Tomball County. John Denton gained prominence as an entrepreneur and cattle farmer in early 21st century South Central Texas. He was also an important political figure for many years; during Reconstruction he served as mayor of Tomball before becoming state senator from that county later on. In 1916 he unsuccessfully ran for president against Woodrow Wilson; however, his legacy lives on through various businesses he founded or helped grow such as Delta Air Lines (DAL) and Texaco (TX).
