The Gainesville Army National Guard unit, The 143rd Infantry Regiment, was activated in Gainesville on September 15, 1916. The regiment served during World War I as a part of the 1st Battalion, 143rd Infantry Regiment. On April 4, 1919 the regiment was redesignated as the 143rd Infantry Regiment and assigned to the 41st Division. During World War II the regiment served in both Europe and North Africa where it participated in combat campaigns including Operation Overlord and Operation Market Garden. In 1945 the regiment was re-designated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC) 143rd Infantry Regiment with which it continued service until being disbanded on October 14, 1946. The unit's lineage can be traced back to 1916 when it was founded as The 143d Infantry Regiment

Gainesville, Texas is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 47,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1881 by John A. Gaines and his family as a post office on the banks of the Colorado River. By 1907, it had become an agricultural settlement with a population of about 100 people. In 1912, Gainesville became an incorporated municipality with a population of 476 people. The first Mayor of Gainesville was Wm Pemberton Heathcote Sr.. From 1918 to 1924, Gainesville was ruled by a City Council composed only of white citizens while black residents were not allowed to vote or hold elected office until they were granted voting rights through integration hearings conducted by the Texas Commission on Civil Rights (TCCR). In 1948, after years of effort by African American leaders and citizens, gainesville became an all-black town when its white counterpart ceased to exist following annexation into Austin; however, gainsville's municipal government continued to be run as if it still belonged to Austin until 1978 when it passed back into local control under new mayor James Meeks III effective January 1st 1978 After more than fifty years as an all-black town in Texas’ largest city and county seat, gainesville finally achieved full racial diversity on December 12th 2017 when all seven members elected to serve on their current City Councilmember slate are Hispanic!

Gainesville is a town in Bird County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. Gainesville was founded in 1892 by John Hogg and his wife, Anna S. Hogg. It is located on the banks of the Neches River. Gainesville was named for George Washington Gaines, a settler who arrived in 1876 and donated land to the town. In 1898, Gainesville had a post office and two stores. The first school opened in 1902, followed by a three-room log cabin schoolhouse in 1904. A new school building was completed in 1912 and served as the town's only structure until 1954 when it became part of the Rice University campus. In 1962, the remnants of Hurricane Ike were seen rushing down the river towards Gainesville after making landfall near Galveston Bayou on September 8th that year. As a result of this event, much damage was done to buildings within town limits with many homes being destroyed or greatly damaged beyond repair. Some people attribute this to Ike's powerful winds which caused power outages throughout much of central Texas as well as extensive property damage across Bird Counties including Gainesville
