Gainesville is a city located in Collin County, Texas, United States. The population was 10,843 at the 2010 census. Gainesville is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area and its ZIP code is 78734. The first settlers in Gainesville were white men who arrived there in 1836 from Illinois. They named the settlement after George Washington's home town of Georgetown, Kentucky. American Indians also inhabited the area at this time. A post office called Gainesville was established in 1839, and until 1850 it was located on what is now First Street. Gainesville, Texas is a small town located in Cameron County, Texas. The population was 3,812 at the 2010 census. Gainesville is known for its Potawatomi Indians and its University of New Mexico campus. The town was founded in 1853 by James Hinton and his family. In 1864, the townsite was platted by John Fenton and his brother-in-law, Samuel Jarrell. The first post office was established in 1870. In 1876, Gainesville became the county seat of Cameron County. A fire destroyed most of the downtown business district in 1898; however, rebuilding began almost immediately. When Cameron County merged with White Rock County on January 1, 1907, Gainesville became part of the new county seat. Gainesville has experienced some growth over the years; it has increased from 2 square miles to 4square miles since 2000 when it annexed adjacent unincorporated communities of Dodson and Mount Pleasant.
