Gainesville, Texas is a town in Collin County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,067 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first residents of Gainesville were Methodist missionaries who established a mission in 1836. The town was organized on November 12, 1881 and named for General James Hance, who had served as a colonel in the Mexican-American War and then as an inspector general of infantry in Texas. On May 26, 1907, Gainesville became the county seat of Collin County after its predecessor Texarkana was annexed by that county. Gainesville has experienced growth over the years due to its location near Dallas-Fort Worth and its role as a center for trade and transportation during the early 20th century. In 1978 it became an incorporated municipality with full voting rights and restrictions on annexation by other municipalities until 2000 when it voted to become one again with these same limitations pending approval from the state legislature. Gainesville is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,596 at the 2010 census. Gainesville was founded in 1887 by Irish immigrants. It is one of the oldest towns in Hudspeth County and has been around for over 100 years. The town is home to the Gainesville Museum and its namesake college, which was established in 1907 and now offers a full range of undergraduate and graduate programs.
Gainesville was founded in 1836 by John A. Gaines and his wife, Sally. The town became an important center for cattle ranching and cotton production during the 1850s and 1860s. After Texas seceded from the United States in 1861, Gainesville was one of the few Texas towns to remain loyal to the Confederate government. In 1865, after Confederate General Robert E. Lee's raid on Fort Worth, Gainesville joined forces with Union forces and surrendered. In the late 1800s, Gainesville became a major agricultural center with a large cotton plantation system. In 1907, Gainesville hosted the first international Fairplex exposition of agriculture and industry. The exposition attracted attention from around the world and helped grow Gainesville's economy further. By 1920, however, most of the cotton plantations had been abandoned and Gainesville's population had shrunk to around 1,000 people. During World War II, much of what is now downtown Gainesville was residential area used as military barracks. After the war ended in 1945, many of these barracks were torn down or converted into smaller homes/condos as rural housing prices continued to rise throughout post-war America.
