Galena Park is a town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,906 at the 2010 census. Galena Park is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the eastern edge of Houston and near MidtownHouston. Galena Park was founded in 1881 by five men who ranched land along Buffalo Bayou. In 1902, the railroad arrived in Galena Park and several businesses were established to serve travelers coming through the area: a hotel, gas station, bakery and grocery store. In 1907, Galena Park became a city with its own city hall and police department. The first mayor of Galena Park was Wm. Aiken Fenton Jr.. In 1916 civic leaders organized what would become the Brazoria County Republican Party which later merged into the Texas Republican Party (TRP). The TRP controlled most aspects of local government until it disbanded in 1966 due to financial irregularities associated with its merger into the larger party structure. Galena park transient campground closed down in 1983 after being operated for more than 30 years without proper permits from Corps of Engineers

Galena Park was named for General James Galena, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became a U.S. Representative from Texas. The town was founded by German settlers in 1873 and grew rapidly after railroads arrived in the early 1800s. By 1910, Galena Park consisted of just over 100 buildings and had a population of 2,000 people. However, during World War II it served as an important airfield and manufacturing center for munitions production by Boeing Aircraft and other companies in nearby Houston. Today, Galena Park remains a sleepy community with few residents and limited economic activity because of its close proximity toHoustonand its large metropolitan area
