The Galena Park Naval Shipyard was one of the earliest naval shipyards in the United States. It was founded in 1887 by Lieutenant Commander John S. Fitch and his assistants, who were interested in building warships for the Texas Navy. The yard built ships such as USS Constitution (1797) and USS Perry (1801). In 1906, Galena Park became part of the new United States Navy Yard at Pearl Harbor. The old navy shipyard was used to build submarines and other underwater vessels. In 1942, it was transferred to the War Department and became the Navy Yard at Galveston. The navy yard closed its doors in 1974 but reopened as a marine science museum in 1984.Today, the Naval Shipyard Museum is an important repository for maritime history in Galveston County, Texas.

A large number of jobs are also available through government contracting opportunities within various sectors including education (through KIPP schools), health care (through county hospitals), transportation (including expressways leading into Dallas-Fort Worth) and other commercial endeavors

Galena Park is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land Metropolitan Statistical Area. It originally was named Silver Spring after silver mines that were nearby. In 1881, a group of investors led by Colonel James Bowie bought the land that now Galena Park from the heirs of John Hance and donated it to the municipality. The name Galena Park was chosen because it meant "silver spring" in English and Spanish. In 1886, Galena Park became a municipality with its own government and elected officials. On February 17, 1888, Galena Park passed an ordinance establishing public schools for all children in the community. The first school building was built on a lot donated by Mrs. Lillie Bowers and dedicated on September 10th of that year. This building still stands today as part of the Municipal Building complex which also includes City Hall and Police Department buildings dating back to 1897-98
