Garland, Texas is a town located in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Garland is about 20 miles (32 km) north-northwest of Fort Worth and 30 miles (48 km) east-northeast of Arlington. The first settlement in Garland was made on November 15, 1881 by William Hargrave and his wife Sarah Underwood Hargrave with six families from England. This gave rise to what is now known as Downtown Garland because it was where business districts were developed around key commercial corridors rather than being scattered throughout centraltown or downtown itself like many other towns in western Texas at that time. Harris also helped create what are now two primary schools within walking distance of each other: North Side Elementary School (on Elm Street) and Southwest Middle School (on Eighth Street).
