The National Guard of Garland, Texas was organized on December 15, 1921. It is one of the oldest and most defunct military organizations in Texas. The original members were soldiers from the United States Army Corps of Engineers who had mobilized for World War I. They were joined by reservists and marines from Fort Worth, San Antonio, Brownsville and other cities. On October 1, 1922, the first unit was activated at a training center located on Commerce Street in downtown Garland. Initially it consisted of a detachment from the 9th Infantry Regiment stationed at Fort Sam Houston Museum. The regiment was then redesignated as the 3d Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment (National Guard) on November 1st 1922. The National Guard has been active in local community service since its inception. Unit deployments have included: disaster relief efforts during Hurricane Harvey; Operation Desert Storm; Hurricane Katrina Recovery; Orange County Sheriff’s Department – Supportive Services Division; American Red Cross – response to wildfires in Texas; Salvation Army – Toys for Tots Collection Program
