Gatesville's name comes from General William T. Gates who fought in the Mexican-American War and was later general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The first settler in Gatesville was John Waddell who arrived in 1847. By 1860 there were 10 families living here including 5 children of Mr. Green who had come from Illinois with his family to homestead land that he owned east of present day town limits. In 1871 Jno Hines settled near where FM 4761 now stands and by 1881 there were 20 families living here with another 10 arriving over the next few years bringing the total number of residents to 30 by 1888 when commercial farming began to take hold in this area The early days of Gatesville were filled with pioneerism as farmers set out to purchase some of what would become known as “the best pieces of country” west of Houston – rolling hills, valleys and wide open prairies that stretched for many miles (sometimes up to 2 or 3 miles). Gatesville is a town in Tom Green County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. Gatesville was founded by John Gates in 1874. The first post office was established in Gatesville on October 25, 1875. The name of the town grew from "Gatesville" to its current form due to the advent of the railroad and other economic development that followed. The original land grant for Gatesville was one mile wide and one mile long with a line six rods deep and fifty rods wide. It consisted of a tract of land lying east of present-day Highway 59 between junction with Carpenter Creek Road (now FM 571) and junction with White Sands Road (FM 1960). Today's part of town lies on this original grant, while the rest is located on modern-day Streetsboro Avenue south of US 59/Highway 59A. John Gates founded Gatesville after purchasing 640 acres from James Hancey in 1874 for $2 per acre ($36 per square mile). At first, Gates had only two buildings – a log cabin and an outhouse – erected within his new community. However, within months, he had organized a society for trading local goods and services with other settlements along what would become known as the San Antonio Trail. By 1880s,Gate City had emerged as one of central Texas' most prominent communities because it embraced both agricultural production through tenant farming arrangements and manufacturing via small businesses run by men skilled in toolmaking and leatherworking. During its early years Gate City relied primarily upon horseback transportation to get goods to market; however, rails arrived soon thereafter which made access to markets much easier.
