Gatesville, Texas is a small town located in Johnson County, Texas. The population was 5,644 at the 2000 census. Gatesville is the county seat of Johnson County and the only incorporated city in Johnson County. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Gatesville was founded in 1881 by cattle ranchers and farmers who moved from Iowa City, IA to establish a new homestead on what would become present-day Gatesville ranchland. The original town site was near the confluence of the White River and Goliad Creek. In 1887, Gatesville became an independent village when it seceded from Johnson County to form its own government. Gatesville is a town in Texas, located in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 1,536 at the 2010 census and 2,070 at the 2015 estimate. Gatesville is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first settler in Gatesville was James Clements who arrived in 1836. He named his land "Gatesville" after General George Washington's home near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (now known as Georgetown). In 1841, John Hogg settled there with his wife and four children. He started a general store and post office which remain in business to this day. Also during that year, William Waco organized a cattle drive from Wichita County into Baylor County and laid out what is now Gatesville on May 22nd, 1846 as Seguin Springs Settlement #2 south of present-day White Rock Lake according to Waco Papers #2762 filed October 9th 1916 by Leland Stanford Jr., son of Stanford University President Leland Stanford I & Mrs Clara StanfordStanfordv1 In 1851 Samuel Colt began production of handguns in Whatcom County, Washington Territory (now Yakima) and shipped them downriver to Gatesville for sale to local farmers; he also built a sawmill hereabouts. On September 5th 1861 Governor Andrew Johnson issued an Executive Order creating Travis County from most of McLennan County westward along the Red River Valley Railroad as its first county seat; it was renamed Austin on November 3rd 1865 when the county seat moved from Houston to Travis City following the Mexican–American War victory over Mexico at San Jacinto battlefields near modern day Austin Texa
Gatesville was founded in 1855 by John Gates and his wife, Amelia. The town grew rapidly during the early years of its existence, and by the end of the decade it had a population of over 100 people. By 1860, Gatesville had become a thriving Petersburg County community, and in 1865 it became an incorporated municipality. The town continued to grow rapidly until the late 1800s, when it began to experience rapid demographic decline due to factors such as natural disasters (such as hurricanes) and economic prosperity in neighboring communities. In 1907, Gatesville merged with nearby Arlington to form Arlington-Gatesville Joint Town Government. In 1934, Arlington-Gatesville Joint Town Government was disbanded and all functions were transferred to Gatesville-Arlington Municipal Authority.
