The Texas Air National Guard has been a part of the state's defense for over 80 years. The Guard was originally organized as an air force in 1907 and the first squadron was formed in 1909. The Guard flew its first mission on October 25, 1912 when it played host to a visiting French Navy squadron. In 1916, the Guard became an all-weather military flying brigade and began using planes for general aviation purposes. In 1938, theGuard became an independent air force and procured new Lockheed P-38 Lightning aircraft. From 1941 to 1945, the Texas Air National Guard fought in World War II as part of USAAF Ninth Air Force. AfterWARS, the TX ANG continued its role as an airforce by becoming a USAFANG from 1951 until 1957 when it reverted to its original status as an air guard unit. In 1959, Republic Aviation Corp., Inc., (now Boeing) leased government property at Georgetown Airport and began construction of what would become known as "The Pentagon." This groundbreaking event marked not only Republic Aviation's arrival into Grayson County but also the beginning of what would be one of TX ANG's longest running partnerships with a single company- Boeing! In 1971, Republic Aircraft Co., Inc., (now McDonnell Douglas) leased land adjacent to George C. Marshall Academy for use as their production facility for RB-29 Superfortresses and KC-135 Stratotankers; this madeTx ANGthe second largest producer of jet aircraft in America after United Airlines! On May 1st 2005 Republic Airways Holdings Corporation (LUV) merged with Delta Airlines parent company DAL - creating one of North America's largest airline companies! As LUV transitioned from mainline carrier to skytrain operator many old flagships were retired or sold off including the LBJ Presidential Jet which served from Dallas/Fort Worth Int'l Airport until 2006! Today, while some aspects may have changed due to global events such as sequestration or pandemic Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), there is no doubt that our State Air National Guardsman are essential membersof Texans' defense system! They continue their service by providing flight training on both combat and passenger jets; maintaining depots across our state; supporting law enforcement;and more!

Georgetown, Texas is a small town in Medina County, Texas. It is located on the banks of the Trinity River. The population was 753 at the 2010 census. Georgetown was named after George Washington's Mount Vernon estate. The first inhabitants of Georgetown were Native Americans who hunted and fished in the area that now comprises the town. In 1836, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered Colonel James Kenedy to establish a military post in what is now Georgetown because of its strategic location near other Mexican towns and Army posts. Kenedy named his post "Santa Anna's Fort" after Santa Anna himself. In 1865, when Ulysses S. Grant moved his army from San Antonio to east Texas to fight Confederate forces under Robert Ewell Hood, he camped at Santa Anna's fort for two nights before moving on to East Austin where he established his headquarters. On October 5, 1865, Grant set up camp about one mile south of present-day Georgetown on land that later became part of Arlington National Cemetery. The first school in Georgetown was started by Rev John Auld in 1851 as "Harper’s Academy". It burned down in 1855 but was rebuilt and renamed "George Washington School" in honor of President George Washington's son-in-law John Marshall Harper who had donated $5,000 for the school's construction). In 1893 it merged with Harper’s Academy (now West Liberty Intermediate School) to become "Georgetown High School". It graduated its first class of seniors in 1899 and became an accredited college/university with a degree program starting during World War I.. After World War II it served as West Liberty Junior College until becoming West Liberty University–Georgetown on September 14th, 1984. The United States Air Force has a long and proud history of gifting items and services to its citizens. The USAF's predecessor, the United States Navy, also gifted items and services to its sailors.
