Georgetown, Texas is a small town located in the state of Texas. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. Georgetown is part of the Austin-San Marcos Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what is now Georgetown were Frenchmen who founded a trading post there in 1821. Englishman James Robertson and his party crossed the Red River on July 4, 1827, while exploring what would become modern-day Texas, and established a Mission in what is now Georgetown. The mission was abandoned in 1829 because of Indians' resistance to Christianity. In 1836, Mexican President Antonio López de Santa Anna authorized General Sam Houston to build a road from San Antonio to Austin through Georgetown and other nearby towns so that goods could be transported more easily between those two cities. AfterHouston's death in1847, Congress passed an act authorizing George Hance to purchase land for an Academy and College at Georgetown. On October 10th of that year (1848), Hance arrived with about seventy students to begin construction on the college which would eventually be called Rice University after its founder Baptist preacher Dr. James Houston rice (1795-1868). After passage of the Morrill Act by Congress in 1862 which gave Kansas statehood, many people from southern Texas came northward looking for new opportunities and found themselves displaced by white residents who had taken over farms they had no choice but to sell or give up because of racial discrimination against African Americans living within their states borders during this time period. As a result of this displacement amounting to over 100% black population growth rates within ten years following Kansas statehood, black families started moving into white neighborhoods outside of downtown Wichita Falls until only a few black families remained inside downtown Wichita Falls after it became majority brown community starting around 1960s when all white neighborhoods outside downtown Wichita Falls were annexed into city limits
