Georgetown, Texas is a small town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,637 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Georgetown was named for General John A. Hardin, commander of the Mexican–American War and later United States Ambassador to Mexico City. The first settlement in Georgetown was on the banks of the San Antonio River by French traders in 1835. In 1836, James Bowie built a cabin on an bluff overlooking the river and named it Fort Bowie after himself and his possessions in Louisiana. The fort served as headquarters for Captain John Fenton's expedition against Crockett's Rangers during their 1837 raid into central Texas. In 1840, Major David Roberts founded what became known as Baylor University and laid out a campus on land that he acquired from José de León y Gómez near present-day Georgetown. By 1845, Baylor had opened its doors to students from all over Texas with classes being offered in agriculture, law, theology (later renamed Catholic University), engineering (later renamed Rice University), medicine (later renamed UT Hospital), business administration (), pharmacy (), and even flooring (). In addition to these primary disciplines there were secondary courses such as English literature () or mathematics (). The university grew rapidly during the 19th century due to national referendums authorizing appropriations for higher education by both state legislatures and Congress (). The history of Georgetown, Texas begins with the arrival of Spanish settlers in 1763. The area that now includes Georgetown was first settled by Native Americans, and it is believed that the first European to settle in what is now Georgetown was José de la Garza. In 1836, the Republic of Texas was founded and Washington County became part of it. The town of Georgetown grew up around this time and soon had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1847, the Republic of Texas split into two parts and Washington County remained part of the new state. This left Georgetown without a government and its residents were forced to live under military rule until 1861 when Texas finally attained its independence from Mexico. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces invadedWashington County and burned down most of the town before withdrawing back into Confederate territory. After the war ended, most citizens returned to their homes in Georgetown but a few maintained their presence in the town until after World War II when they officially left for good. Georgetown experienced some significant growth during World War II as many local businesses went off-line due to demand for wartime materials such as rubber products and aircraft parts. However, during Reconstruction following Reconstructionism’s failure in America following slavery’sabolition, many white northerners moved into what is now black neighborhoods while many African Americans continued living behind fences or poverty stricken families until 1955 when Brown v Boardinghouse led to integration at schools throughout America which began in earnest at Georgetown schools starting with Hunter High School (now known as Booker T Washington High School) in 1955. Since then there have been sporadic attempts by some Hasidic Jews who own businesses within walking distance from their religious center to open up stores inside black neighborhoods outside of downtown since gentrification has become more common within black neighborhoods than within white ones; however these efforts have generally failed because gentrificationstrips out low-income communities while preserving high-income ones which gives control over these areas back to those who can afford it while denied access to public education or other opportunities that may make them more viable economically than before."
The first permanent settler in Georgetown was James Robertson, who arrived in 1836. He and his wife, Eleanor, had two children. Robertson named the town after himself, but it was not until 1840 that a post office called Georgetown was established. The first store in Georgetown opened in 1847. In 1860, the town's first school was built. In 1865, the Texas Legislature created the county of Austin and incorporated Georgetown into it. In 1867, a sawmill and grist mill were built in Georgetown by John A. Hogg for $4,000. The mills continued to be used until the early 1900s. In 1890-1892, George Washington Carver began working at the American Tobacco Company as a field worker in Georgetown. After five years of work there he moved to Camden County to become manager of their agricultural farm there before returning to America in 1896 and starting his own company there. His works at American Tobacco are still remembered today as some of the most significant advances in cigarette manufacturing ever made
