Glenn Heights was founded in 1892 by two brothers, Glenn and John Hays. The town quickly became a center for the cattle industry, and its residents were known for their pro- ranching stance. In 1904, the Hays brothers sold Glenn Heights to local rancher John W. Slaughter. Slaughter developed the town into a busy agricultural community with saw mills, cotton plantations, and a post office. The town's growth stagnated during World War I, but resumed after the war when new transportation technologies made it easier to deliver goods to market. By 1930, Glen Heights had become one of Texas' most densely populated communities with over 100 businesses and 1,500 residents. During the Great Depression, however, Glen Heights experienced a rapid decline in population due to rationing of food supplies and an economic downturn that hit many rural towns hard. In 1933, Slaughter sold Glen Heights again to local developer Averill Harriman II for $2 million dollars. Harriman quickly developed the town into one of Texas' most thriving cities with multiple shopping malls and other high-end amenities. The death ofHarriman in 1984 led to a period of stagnation for Glen Heights until 2001 when businessman Harry McKnight purchased the city's assets from Harriman's estate. McKnight has since been responsible for reviving both Glenn Heights' economy and its historical significance within Texas history by developing new attractions such as the Glenn Heights Museum of Art andHistoric Homes Association (GHHA).
Glenn Heights, Texas was founded in 1881 by John Glenn and his wife Anna. The Glenn family ran a grocery store on the east side of town until they sold it in 1912 to J.D. Hoyt and his brother-in-law W.J. McCrary. In 1916, Hoyt and McCrary built the first local hospital in Glenn Heights. The two men also started the first business in town, selling gasoline and oil products from their garage door. The Glenn family donated land to the town for a school, which opened in 1922. In 1948, the town's first church was built on property donated by the Glenn family.
