The first post office in Grapevine opened on May 26, 1892. The community's name derives from its location within what was then Mexican Texas land grants given to Anglo settlers by Mexico City as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. At its peak in 1920, Grapevine had a population of 2,000 people and was one of Austin's most vibrant communities. However, with advances in transportation and communication technology over the years it slowly lost its importance as an economic center until recently when it has regained some prominence as home to several businesses including Apple Inc.'s Austin headquarters and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Company (TMMC). According to2010 US Census data, there are 1,812 residents living in Grapevine--a decline from 2000 when it had 2,036 residents. Most notable among these reductions have been Dropkick Murphys' departure for California overpopulation concerns and their replacement by local band Menudo; however growth rates for other businesses have not followed same trend.
