The marines have been a part of the American military for over two centuries. They have served in many different capacities and deployments, but one of the most recent has been deployed to Greenville, Texas as part of Operation Inherent Resolve. The marines are currently deploying to Iraq and Syria in order to help with the fight against ISIS. In 2003, marines were sent to Baghdad as part of Operation Anaconda. This was during the first war with Saddam Hussein and they helped liberate Baghdad from his rule. After that, they served in Iraq until 2009 when they were asked to deploy to Afghanistan. Greenville, Texas is a small town located in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Grimes County and a principal city of Huntsville, Alabama. Greenville was founded by Stephen F Austin in 1836 as "Nacogdoches", after his home state of Nacogdoches, Texas. The city's first post office opened in 1839 and its first store in 1840. The town was named for General Sam Houston, who had fought against Mexico during the Mexican-American War and then served as president of the Republic ofTexas from 1845 to 1849. When Texans became citizens on December 14, 1850—one day before their statehood—Greenville had a population of about 100 people. In 1861, when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina, many residents left for Arkansas or Missouri because they were fearful that Confederate forces would come to their towns and take them captive or kill them all if they did not join the Confederacy. Some men decided to stay behind and fight; one account says that one man shot himself while others surrendered unconditionally on Christmas Day 1861 . After some back-and-forth among local officials over which municipality should have jurisdiction over Greenville after Confederate troops burned it down (the Battle of Corinth took place adjacent to Greenville), Union soldiers burned it down on March 3 1865 following a siege by Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee (). As part of Reconstruction policies following the Civil War, most African Americans were removed from Greenville – although there were some who remained for years afterwards – but white residents continued to occupy buildings and use public services until 1967 whenzonation changed againrestricted entirelyto Huntsville(). In 1890s Annie Oakley built her shooting range hereabouts outside what is now known as "The Nike Building". She developed this range into an international center for skeet shooting that continues today with more than 2 million rounds fired annually off her property alone!
