The National Guard was first organized in Texas in 1846 as the guard of the port of Laredo. It grew rapidly and by 1880 had become a state militia. In 1907, it became an independent service with its own governor and lieutenant governor. The National Guard is today headquartered in Austin, Texas. One of the most important gifts given to the National Guard over time has been firearms. Firearms have played an important role in the history of the National Guard and have helped protect our country from harm both during wartime and peacetime. Some of the earliest rifles used by members of the guard were captured weapons taken from Mexican forces during their war against Mexico (1846-48). The Greenville National Guard was organized on December 14, 1935. The unit was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division and activated on January 5, 1936. The regiment served in the Spanish-American War and World War I. In 1927, the 3rd Infantry Division formed a battalion of women soldiers as part of the Army Women's League. On November 10, 1929, at Fort Worth Army Air Field, Greenville AAVL became one of two African American battalions in the United States Armed Forces when it was accepted into service with black officers and enlisted men from the segregated 1st Battalion, 38th Regiment (African Americans). On October 11, 1932, Texas senator John F. Kennedy announced his candidacy for President of the United States; he would be running against incumbent Franklin D. Roosevelt. On November 3rd Representative Willard Ellington announced his candidacy for Lieutenant Governor of Texas; he would run against incumbent Clyde Hensley Jr.. On November 10th Congressman Hudsucker announced he would not seek reelection to Congress; he would instead run for Mayor of Houston. On December 14th Captain Harry Payne Beaulieu ordered all units in Texas mobilized for federal purposes if Nazi Germany invaded Austria: "All members thereof are required to report immediately to their commands." On February 8th 1939 Major General James Mclendon ordered all military forces in Texas mobilized if war with Nazi Germany were declared: "This order is pregnant with significance because it authorizes mobilizing entire divisions within this state should war break out between America and Germany."
Greenville, Texas is a city in Collin County, Texas, United States. The population was 913 at the 2010 census. The name of the city comes from the color green and white. It is located in the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. The town began as a small community called Greenville on the banks of Buffalo Bayou in 1881. On November 15, 1907, Greenville was incorporated as a city with a population of 1,500 people. When Houston annexed Collin County in 1959, Greenville became part ofHouston proper. Greenville is known for its shopping districts - Main Street and State Highway 157 - which are home to some of the country's largest department stores including Sears and Marshall Field's. Other prominent businesses include giant tire companies Raytheon and DuPont among others. In addition to its many stores and restaurants, Greenville also has an arts center which includes two theaters and several art galleries including Barnes & Noble bookstore chains JCPenney Department Store chain Macy's and Sears respectively as well as WEA Home Entertainment Company (a former Time Warner company) who own numerous movie theaters throughout downtown along with various smaller cinemas around town including Regal Cinemas across from Interstate 10 West exit 214 on Elmendorf Road, just east of I-10 near Steele Road; AMC Theaters Downtown on Weldon Avenue; Hard Rock Café/Downtown Diner on University Drive; Sam's Club All-Star Sports Complex (now Perry Ellis); BJ&J Supermarket anchors both sides of US 95 southbound between Loop 610 Speedway east of Greenville Crossing Boulevard; Lufkin Park which features a large lake filled with fountains that provide morning entertainment such as fishing tournaments during summer months when water levels are high enough; numerous churches - primarily Baptist - dot the landscape while smaller denominations abound such as Methodist Church have centers located throughout town although these days most services take place inside scriptural references or at local libraries or churchyards rather than outdoors like they once did
