It was founded in 1879 by George W. Nichols as a settlement near what is now Denton and became an incorporated town in 1907. The original name for Groves was "New Hope." There are several theories about why Groves received its current name: one suggests that it commemorates General George Washington's stay at Horseshoe Bend while on his tour of central Texas in 1798-99; another suggests that the name originated with J.D. Rockefeller's hope to found a utopian community near Fort Worth called New Hope after he had seen an advertisement for such a place printed in an old newspaper; or else it may be derived from grove of trees which were common before logging began along the Trinity River bank west of Groves in early nineteenth century. The first grocery store opened within what is now Groves in 1907 and served as the town's center until 1951 when a new shopping mall was built nearby and most of the downtown business moved into it. At one time, Grovers had over 100 local businesses employing more than 2,000 people providing many services including streetlights, water systems and educational opportunities for its citizens through churches, schools and libraries). In recent years much attention has been paid to efforts to revive downtown Groves with various projects underway such as restoration of some historic buildings (e.g., Riddle School Annex), development of new attractions (e.g., Aquarium Park) and promotion of events (e.g., Christmas tree lighting).
