Haltom City, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the seat of Haltom County. The population was 927 at the 2010 census, which makes it the second-smallest city in Texas after McKinney. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The name "Haltom" comes from John Sutter's discovery of oil near Haltom City in 1859 and his battle to get rights to its oil. Although white people had been living here since multiple cultures were brought together by Christopher Cline in 1836, they did not develop it as a town until 1860 when James Hance founded Hanceville on land he purchased from Sutter for $2 per acre (1/4 mile²). In 1907, Hanceville merged with neighboring Wichita Falls to become what is now known as Wichita Falls–Holtzmann Airport however, that merger did not last and Wichita Falls continued to operate as an independent municipality until 2013 when it became part of Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. At its peak in 1920, population was around 1,700; today it has declined to below 700 residents due largely to loss of jobs in nearby industries such as petroleum and aviation combined with annexation by Arlington Heights which has had a more significant impact on downtown development than Haltom City ever could have imagined. In spite of this decline over time, however, there are still several businesses active within downtown that continue to be important economic drivers for the city even during difficult times.
