The first record of organized coffee house activity in Haltom City occurred in 1892 when a group of businessmen pooled their resources to start the First National Coffee House. Over time, other businesses cropped up around this meeting place including the Second National Coffee House in 1903 and The Star-Telegram Newspaper Printing Shop from 1914-1920. In 1923, The Dobson paper mill closed down and left a big hole in the local economy. However, it didn't stop locals from starting their own businesses to take advantage of the mills closure - The Record Book Store opened its doors on Main Street in 1925 and Lumberjacks Coffee shop followed suit two years later. Throughout these years, coffee has been an important part of life here and has even been used as a currency by some residents. When gas prices began rising during World War II, many people turned to beans for fuel instead of gasoline or other items they could find at market rates. As a result, Haltom City became known as "The Bean Capital of the World" for decades!
Haltom City is a small town in Kerr County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,052 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Chisholm Trail and is home to the Haltom City Museum. The town of Haltom City was founded in 1887 by John A. McConnell and his brother-in-law, General George Armstrong Custer. The name comes from a ranch that John A. McConnell had purchased in 1876 near present-day Midlothian, Texas. After serving as an army general during the Mexican–American War and other military campaigns, Custer returned to civilian life in 1881 and began developing land around Haltom City for farming purposes. In 1890 he sold most of his holdings in Haltom City to James Gorman Sr., son of James Gorman Jr., one of the original settlers of Kerr County. In 1915 Jonell O’Connell—an early settler and postmaster who later became mayor of Austin—founded the first radio station inTexas with one transmitter east of San Antonio; it operated for six months before being taken over by Mutual Broadcasting Company (MBC). In 1925 O’Connell donated land adjoining his own home on Main Street to build what would become known as "Haltom Park." The park served as a public square until annexation by Austin in 1935; since then it has been used primarily as a community center/parking lot. On July 6, 1948 local teenager Rock Hudson played guitar at a party thrown by Mayor O’Connell at his home while parents were away; this event is sometimes cited as marking the beginning of rockabilly music appreciation in Texas
