In 1881, Harker Heights was founded by John Harker and his wife, Eliza. The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s as settlers arrived from eastern Kentucky and Tennessee. By 1830, Harker Heights had a population of 350 people. By 1840, the population had increased to 1,100 people. In 1860, John Harker donated land to the town for a cemetery. The first school in Harker Heights was built in 1868. The first store opened in 1870. The first home was built in 1875. In 1886, the town renamed itself after its founder, John Harker Jr.. In 1903, the Texas Legislature designated Harker Heights an incorporated village. A library was built in 1914 andnamed afterMrs.Harkin Matson who endowed it with funds from her estate.. From 1929 until 1951, when it closed due to lack of funding, the high school functioned as a junior college.
Harker Heights was founded in 1881 by the brothers Elijah and George Harker. The town developed primarily as a cotton plantation center, with large plantations such as the Harkers' own located near its center. However, following the American Civil War, cotton production in Texas declined, and Harker Heights became largely a rural community.
