Harker Heights is a small town located in Houston, Texas. The population was 9,821 at the 2000 census. It is considered part of the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area. Harker Heights was founded on May 15, 1881 by Dr. John A. Harker and his wife Eliza Jane Childs Harker with the help of their brother-in-law, Colonel Gouverneur Morris. The early settlers were Methodists who named their community after Reverend George Harker of Spartanburg County, South Carolina, who had preached to them in their home state during transformer repairs that season. In 1892, Dr. John A. Harker donated land to build an Episcopal church and cemetery in honor of his father-in-law Revd Geo Leland Stanford Jr., American president from 1893 to 1897 and founder of Stanford University (later Stanford Law School). When Revd Geo's body was interred there in 1901 it became known as "Harker Hill." The town grew rapidly due to its location near UptownHouston and its easy access to railroads and highways. In 1916 the first post office opened in the town with a population of just seventy people; by 1930 that number had grown to over 2,000 residents living in twenty homes along Grand Parkway . Growth continued until World War II when manufacturing jobs dried up around Houston while demand for military supplies increased throughout the war . By 1960 Harker Heights had reached 3,000 residents and consisted of ninety homes scattered along two miles of Interstate 10 ; within thirty years it had shrunk back down to fewer than fifty residences . However growth has recently resumed with plans for a new high school (opened Fall 2017) and several housing developments which could add another thousand residents over the next few decades if approved by city planners
