Today, Harlingen is a small, rural community located about 25 miles east of Austin on I-35. In 1881, Harlingen was an unincorporated community located in southeastern Travis County. The community was named for Carl Wilhelm Hardinge, a naturalist and explorer who had earlier journeyed through this area. In 1920, the town of Harlingen merged with the neighboring township of Rocksprings to form the new city of Harlingen. At that time, it had a population of just under 1,000 people.
