The name Harlingen comes from German settlers who named their settlement after a place called Haldane in North Yorkshire, England. The first post office in the community was established in 1872. In 1907, a fire destroyed most of the business buildings in Harlingen and many people were forced to flee. However, by 1912, many businesses had reopened and growth continued until the 1940s when World War II led to decreased enrollment and then decline until the current population of 7,000. Coffee began being exported around the world but it wasn’t until around 1870 that it started becoming popularized within North America. The Ulysses S Grant Coffee House was founded in 1865 and became one of the earliest known cafes serving espresso based drinks such as cappuccino and latte macchiato with added milk or whipped cream! Over time more cafes followed suit throughout North America including ones like The Ritz-Carlton Hotel & Tower on Fifth Avenue which served RM8 ($25) per person per day when opened in 1912! These types of venues gave people access to high end espresso based drinks without having to go out into society or spend extra money on food!

The Harlingen area was first settled in the late 1800s by farmers looking for a new place to grow crops. The original town was founded on the now-vanished Rancho del Rio Indian Reservation and named after Captain James Hargrave, who had built it. The town grew rapidly because of its position at the crossroads of several cattle trails and its easy access to water. By 1900, Harlingen had a population of around 100 people and a school system that included one grade per mile. In 1907, an act of Congress designated Harlingen as the county seat of Webb County. This gave the town new impetus and made it possible for it to become a major commercial center. In 1916, Mayor Harry Armstrong helped found the Webb County Museum which still preserves many old artifacts from Harlingen’s past. The city also developed strong ties with agriculture through organizations like the Texas Cattlemen’s Association and the Texas Grain Growers’ Association. In 1924, Mayor Willard Dutton placed a modern municipal building on Water Street which remains in use today as City Hall. During World War II, Harlingen became an important supply center for American troops stationed in Northern Mexico. To cope with increased traffic and supplies shortages, Mayor Dutton initiated many redevelopment projects in downtown Harlingen including creation of a law enforcement substation, addition of public baths and theaters, expansion of sidewalks and streetlights, reconstruction of Market Square (now called Fountain Square), installation of electric lights throughout the city limits, and construction of new streetscape features such as curbside gardens/showers/delivery vehicles stoplights etc.. After World War II ended, most businesses closed down within a few years due to difficult economic times while downtown remained largely unchanged until 1990 when plans were announced to demolish much of downtown in order to rebuild with more commercial spaces featuring high rises that would overlook Fountain Square
