The National Guard of Hereford, Texas was organized on December 3, 1921. The unit was made up of men from the surrounding counties and consisted of only a few hundred soldiers. On December 16, 1921, the first national guard team played in Hereford against the Texas Rangers. The Rangers were led by Captain Harry Rankin and they won 4-1. In 1934, the Hereford National Guard added a battalion called the 9th Battalion which was raised from men who had been mobilized for World War II. On January 1, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order creating the National Guard Bureau within the Department of Defense to manage and control all military forces within the United States except those specifically exempted under Title 10 USC § 641(a). This gave rise to concerns that if war with Nazi Germany began it would be difficult to keep our country’s units apart and prevent any mobilization or deployment without prior notice to civilians or elected officials in their respective counties. On November 23rd 1938 Governor James Fenton activated Militia Force No 2 heretofore composed of citizens who had volunteered for service in World War I (1914-1918) as well as reservists who had served since 1917. In order that these men might become fully mobilized during this time there was an organizational change; instead of having each unit report directly to their battalion commander either at home or on duty in field units stationed near major cities then commanders reported through brigade headquarters also located at major cities which functioned as command posts for battalions scattered throughout various county towns as needed while on maneuvers outside city limits; drill sergeants being commissioned officers like all other NCOs having Drill Sergeant ranks but no actual authority over men under their command until Major General orders were given commanding them thereto; Assemble now form companies one thousand nine hundred fifty five (1st Regiment Infantry Brigade) Ladies And Gentlemen! Thereafter individual commanders continued reporting through brigade headquarters but sergeants became drill majors rather than majors general commanding single battalions hereafter with several brigades commands operating concurrently with one another sharing a theater area when engaged in maneuvers outside city limits where City Limits did not apply

In 1907, Hereford annexed the neighboring town of Haskell to form a single municipality. On December 8, 1961, Hereford merger with Archer County to form what is now Texas (TX) County.
