In 1845,Mexican General José Uribe y Costilla invaded Texas and defeated Mexican forces at the Battle of San Jacinto. America then claimed TX as its new territory. The Alamo was captured by American forces in 1847 and used as a military base for their war with Mexico. In 1850, the US Congress passed an act granting voting rights to Native Americans in TX (this is still in effect). In 1861, when Confederate soldiers attacked American troops stationed at Fort Sumter in SC, Texan volunteer militia fighters led by Sam Houston defended the fort against overwhelming Confederate firepower. After years of fighting and attrition, Union troops finally took control of TX in 1865 after capturing Austin and other major cities.
The town of Hidalgo was founded by Gabriel de la Garza in 1778. The town was named for the Spanish General Mariano Hidalgo, who fought against Mexico in 1810.
