Hidalgo, Texas is a city in west-central Texas and the county seat of Hidalgo County. The population was 13,711 as of the 2010 census. The name "Hidalgo" comes from Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto's name for the Gulf of Mexico: "Hidálago". The city was founded in 1848 by Capt. James Fenton and his family after they discovered land that would later become Hidalgo County. The first town in what is now Hidalgo County was Riceville, which was established in 1824 by Major General Martin Austin and his army during the Mexican–American War. After Mexican troops burned Riceville on July 6, 1825, Austin ordered his men to burn any Mexican settlements found north of la Purísima (the modern day border between Mexico and Texas). This included Riceville. Captain James Fenton located this site on November 7, 1848 while exploring northwest Texas for new land grants. He named it Hidalgo after King Ferdinand II of Spain who had visited central Texas twice in 1793 and 1800. Fenton's settlement began to grow rapidly with additional families joining him in 1850; at its peak there were twenty-four families living here. By 1860, most of what is now Hidalgo County had been acquired by Fenton and his heirs as part of their purchase from Mexico of all present-day Texans east of San Antonio River including Nacogdoches and Victoria counties.. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert E Lee attacked Fort Sumter near Corpus Christi Creek resulting in over 200 Confederate casualties including many women and children trapped inside Fort Sumter until Union soldiers arrived to save them on April 12th 1865. For this action Governor Perna awarded General Santa Anna with a Medal Of Honor The City Council decided on February 5th 1886 to change the name from Riceville to Hidalgo following recommendations made by Mayor Ceferino Gonzalez In 1898 when Lubbock became an independent city it changed its name also to Lubbock but retained vestige of its old Hispanic heritage

The general store on Hidalgo was founded in 1836 by José Antonio Hidalgo. The store was known for its quality goods, and it became a popular tourist destination because of its location near the Presidio of San Miguel de Allende. In 1951, the store was closed due to a fire that destroyed most of the building.
