In 1875, President Ulysses S Grant issued Executive Order No. 9 south of Austin providing for the partitioning of cattle country between Americans and Mexicans who were already living there illegally (estimated number at 100,000). This order led to a race-baiting incident between white settlers and Mexican immigrants called "The Battle of Tamaulipas." In 1913-14 construction began on what is now Southwest University Lake in present-day Hidalgo County while Southwest University was still known as Austin College (later UT Longhorn). The university opened in 1914 with 44 students but soon grew larger because it offered undergraduate level courses leading up to graduate level programs such as law enforcement officer training or medical science degree programs; today it offers more than 200 undergraduate degrees including business administration/management/finance/commerce/engineering/law/.
