This allowed him to develop trade relationships with different parts of America. In 1828, Captain John Fetterman built a shipping dock at what is now called Fort Worth so that he could export goods such as wheat and cotton to Europe. During this time period, people were beginning to learn about coffee trees and how to roast them properly. By 1830, several farmers had started growing coffee plants near Fort Worth. By 1840, these farmers had begun exporting their products to various European countries such as England and France. By 1850, Highland had become an important commercial center for coffee because it employed many people who exported beans across the United States. In 1860-1861, Colonel JF Hogg established a plantation near Sparta which furnished wood for early steamboats on the Trinity River system

In 1915, Donahue's Gourmet Coffee Store was opened in Richardson and quickly became a specialty store for coffee enthusiasts all over the country. In 1928, Bob Arrington and his brother Tex closed their business and reopened as The Arlington Coffee Company with a focus on providing world-class coffee to Highlands residents. In 1951, Bob Arrington's son Rick took over as manager of The Arlington Coffee Company and continued to grow the company into what it is today - one of the most successful grocery stores in Dallas/Fort Worth with over 350 employees. In 1966, Rick Arrington passed away and his son Ron took over as manager of the company untilRick’s death in 1986. Ron Arrington continued to manage the company until its sale to Starbucks in 1998.
