Houston is a city with a rich military history. The first Houston-based Army unit was the 1st Battalion, Texas Rangers in 1892. The city’s history with the military dates back to World War I when it was the home of Camp Houston. From 1917 to 1919, Houston served as the staging ground for Operation Market Garden, which resulted in German losses at Ypres. In 1924, the United States Congress designated Houston as an emergency site for storage of munitions after an explosion at Dow Chemical Company destroyed much of downtown Houston. Over time, Camp Houston became a training and Doctrine Command headquarters for service branches such as the Marine Corps (1948), Air Force (1949), Navy (1950), and Army (1991). On July 25, 1991, President George H.W. Bush authorized activation of Fort Hood Garrison Command to provide garrison support for U.S Forces Korea while also providing resources and command and control functions for Unified Command Southwest Asia which included forces deployed in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
